Frontier Days stretches the limits

Frontier Days stretches the limits

CHEYENNE — Officially, Cheyenne Frontier Days kicks off its 114th go-round tomorrow, but the world-famous Daddy of 'em All already is going nearly full speed.

Billed as the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration, Frontier Days offer a mix of sports, music and entertainment for everyone in a family, putting it on the “must see” lists of many national travel organizations and making it one of Wyoming’s big tourism draws.

Morning slack rodeo started Tuesday for some cowboys and cowgirls, because there won’t be room for all of them in the nine daily performances that start Saturday and run through Sunday, Aug. 1.

Tonight is the 30th Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show and Sale, an annual event that attracts top artists and art lovers from all over the country. This year’s show and sale features more than 300 pieces of art, from paintings to Navajo weavings. Artwork will remain on view for the duration of Frontier Days.

Tomorrow the midway opens and the Frontier Nights begin with the first of nine night shows, the heavy metal band KISS with Alana Grace, followed Saturday by the Brooks and Dunn farewell tour. Other night shows include Aaron Tippin and Neal McCoy (July 25), Professional Bull Riders competition (July 26-27); Clay Walker and Glen Templeton July 28); Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert (July 29); Sugarland and Danny Gokey (July 30); and Alan Jackson and Josh Turner (July 31).

Frontier Days features nine performances of  Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo and draws about 1,500 pro cowboys and cowgirls competing for a $1 million purse. Last December, PRCA cowboys voted Cheyenne the best Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year Award for the 11th time.

CFD features four parades downtown and free pancake breakfasts in Depot Square next week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Other featured events include Indian dancing in Frontier Park, military displays at Fort D.A. Russell Days at F.E. Warren Air Force Base during the first weekend, and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds’ annual air show next Wednesday.
